Ian, aka @coffeehopper of Atkinsons tea and coffee fame tells me that the best coffee place around Lancaster and surroundings now opens on Sundays. It has made my day.
GO THERE. It’s on Sun Street.

Earlier this week I had the (nasty) surprise to get up in and discover that the only coffee in the cupboard was not the usual ground Carte Noire but the Carte Noire “Grains de Café”. Schoolboy error! Not so much of a problem if we had a buff grinder.
1st try: tea towel and rolling pin. inconsistent ground which led insispid tasting coffee
2nd try: pester and mortar. hard work! still some variation in grain size but a much better coffee than with the tea towel/rolling pin method.
3rd try: pester and mortar. kept mashing the beans a little longer. made a good strong coffee but not as good as with off the shelf ground carte noire coffee
4th try: pester and mortar. kept on banging on the beans until it reached a fine powder consistency. Result: excellent. strong and tasty coffee. Perfect accompaniement to some toast and Nutella.
